Most motorists mistakenly believe that this operation does not require special attention and when installing the battery, it can be connected to the on-board network in an arbitrary sequence, in fact, this is not so.

How to put on the terminals
Wear connectors when connecting the battery should be in a strictly defined sequence. Before connecting, you must:
- remove oil pollution, traces of corrosion with a rag;
- wipe with a non-aggressive solvent;
- sandpaper with fine dispersion;
- treat with a special compound (can be solid oil or silicone grease).
Next, you need to determine the polarity. After determining where the positive and negative terminals of the battery are located, place the battery so that the connectors to the vehicle’s on-board network do not intersect and reach their regular connection points.
After that, put on the positive connector so that it fits as tightly as possible. After that, it is necessary to clamp it. There are two main ways to clamp:
- using a bolted connection (usually with a 10 key);
- special crimping nut-wing large diameter.
After fixing the positive connector, the negative connector is worn.
How to identify a positive terminal
The constructive arrangement of the positive and negative terminals of the battery can be of two types: direct (European) and reverse (Asian). If you did not pay attention to this fact during the purchase of the battery, then you can determine the polarity according to the designation indicated on the battery case.
The plus terminal is indicated by the “+” sign. This inscription on the case is usually made by the relief method to make it easier to carry out control in the dark.
An additional way to control the polarity is that the plus has a larger diameter (thickness). If you accidentally put the negative connector on the positive terminal, it is difficult to put on or does not fit at all. Moreover, the diameters of positive and negative are respectively 19.5 and 17.9 (Europe), 12.7 and 11.1 (Asia).
The power cable to the positive terminal of the battery usually has a red insulation color. It can also be determined by the inside diameter of the connector.
What will result in a sequence error
If the installation is carried out in a different sequence with the observance of safety measures, theoretically there is no danger. However, if you first set the negative and fix it, then shorten the positive terminal to the car body with a key or other metal object during installation, a short circuit of terrible force will occur. A huge current will flow. This can lead to:
- to the destruction of the integrity of the battery;
- to the failure of the battery, the destruction of the plates;
- to thermal and chemical burns of the skin;
- to damage to the organs of vision;
- to a malfunction of the car's electrical equipment.
The price of an error if the battery connection sequence is not followed is high. It is necessary to strictly adhere to the established rules.
